We are offering a 5-hour Private Tour of the beautiful Magnolia Plantation and Gardens—the oldest privately owned gardens in America. Immerse yourself in thousands of exotic flowers as your professional guide shows you the hidden gems of this botanical wonder. Below, we will outline the best reasons to choose Magnolia when booking with us, with a quick background of the plantation along with an overview of other activities offered during your tour.

    MORE THAN A PLANTATION

Magnolia Plantation not only captivates you with exquisite beauty and mystery but also pulls at your heart strings like no other plantation in Charleston. It orchestrates this through its many colorful flowers, Romantic-style garden, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and distinctive buildings, including a conservatory and a carriage and plantation house. In addition to this being a much sought after tourist destination because it is historically rich and aesthetically pleasing, it also offers prime event space perfect for weddings. It is a breathtaking and magical place guaranteed to win your heart several times over!

Upon arrival to the plantation, Crafted Travel allows you to choose two attractions from six options, so be sure to take the time to select which would be most meaningful to you. As listed above, some of our most popular picks include a trip to the Romantic Gardens and a Train Tour. Many of our guests find that these options best encapsulate the brightness and beauty of the area while also giving an opportunity to learn about Charleston’s most visited gardens. If you want to go a different route, you could check out the Magnolia House Tour or take a trip to the Audubon Swamp Gardens, where you’ll explore a waterfowl habitat peppered with cypress and gum trees surrounded by blackwater. Navigation is made simple with the use of boardwalks, pathways and bridges.

    A QUICK HISTORY LESSON

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is one of the oldest surviving plantations in the South. It’s also the longest-lasting privately-owned garden in the country as it was formally established with a home and small garden in 1670. Both Magnolia and the adjoining Drayton Hall property have been under the control of the prominent Drayton family—through fifteen generations.

The plantation was originally suited for rice cultivation, with extensive earthworks of dams and dikes built specifically for this purpose. Slaves working on the property developed a Gullah language that reflected a unique and vibrant culture that made life more bearable. And the original plantation house was burned by Union troops during the Civil War, but it was revived during Reconstruction around the same time John Drayton opened the gardens to the public.
